Agile coaches and Scrum masters are the indivisible part of agility. We in our various previous agile and scrum articles have discussed Scrum masters and agile coaches their job and duty. The daily scrum is one of the many responsibilities of Scrum masters and coaches and the important one. A daily scrum is an important event as it helps to derive the most from this event for the team. It gives the team a target to complete, a force to drive them throughout the day, and provides the team with energy to collaborate and give their best within this minimum time of 15 minutes. To achieve this from overall sprint is the responsibility of a scrum master or coaches to perform. Therefore most times scrum masters are the person who becomes the center of attention during the whole daily scrum. But what if a scrum master or coach is not available? In many cases, an absence of coaches creates dysfunctions during the daily scrum. As these events are mainly for the team and team members it’s always necessary to make team take these events responsibility. As the leader of the team, scrum masters must coach their team members in handling such events in both presence and absence of coaches.

With this statement in mind, we as a scrum masters will learn today how to create a team that can handle and facilitate the daily scrum as a leader without scrum masters. While coaching a team to take daily scrum the scrum masters or even in absence of coaches a team must remember this point.
Don’t make Daily Scrum a Status Update Session
In many organizations, the daily scrum is the most misunderstood concept. They consider the daily scrum as the status update session and only discuss their work progress. Which makes the scrum masters the center of attention of the team. So these issues but be checked, observed while happening, and further counter-measured. The daily scrum must be strictly an event for the planning of daily work and issue solving sessions so that the daily work must be done smoothly. As the daily scrum is for the daily planning and obstacle removing event it can also be done without the help of coaches and scrum masters. Team members as developers are supposed to support each other and plan along.
As a scrum master when you observe that the developers are directed at you try to avoid eye contact, or duct out from the meeting in name of emergency, or simply avoid being at the center and being at a remote zone while meeting. Overall, try to give developers a message by your actions that, they are needed to discuss things with each other and not to a scrum master.
Conduct Event in Such Way that Teams Take Controls
In various cases as the team avoid speaking at starting the scrum master starts taking their names out so that they should speak. Further, it becomes a habit of the team members and they wait to be called out for their turn even if they have points to talk on. Crosstalk in such cases gets too limited. This Scenario always creates a feeling of being a scrum master authority and they as the owner of these meetings or they receive some benefits from it and not the team. So every scrum master while facilitating such events tries to avoid creating a power dynamic of theirs and make team involved as in their event. This can be done with some tricks like calling out only to the first person’s name and then asking them to carry out by suggesting the next one or just asking at starting to team members if anyone would like to do the start and discuss their points and opinions for the day.
Turn Event Power over Developers
As the daily scrum is for developers and team members, it is wise to handover the event to them entirely. Even though the scrum masters are responsible to facilitate the event they can just decide the required details and let the team handle the actual event. Set some basic format for the team at starting and then ask them to carry the event following this format without your guidance. Once they are set in it encourages them to carry on some new things and experiment with the event. It’s always better to give complete control of the event to the team as soon as possible. Let them learn new best ways that work for them as a team. Help them know self-organization and management as an individual and as a team. It’s often said that “The actual leader knows when to step aside.”
